Molasses Cookies

From a 1784 recipe book.

Ingredients

  • 3/4c butter, softened

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4c molasses

  • 2c flour

  • 1c sugar

  • 1t baking soda

  • 1t baking powder

  • 1t ground cinnamon

  • 1t ground ginger

  • 1t ground nutmeg

  • 1/4t ground cloves

  • 1/4t allspice

  • 1/2c sugar, for rolling

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375F.

  • Beat butter, egg & molasses in a large bowl.

  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and spices.

  • Add dry ingredients to butter mixture. Beat until smooth.

  • Form dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in sugar.

  • Bake at 375F for 9 to 11 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
